Who is Slō Motion?

When Roger Ortega was 14, he formed a pop group called The Mex-Mix with his cousin and a childhood friend.  Soon after, he invited Billy Davis—who he knew from choir class—to join. Billy’s darker, raspy tone immediately gave the group a stronger vocal presence.

As the lineup changed and two original members moved on, Dave Spritzer stepped in. Dave played trombone in Roger’s dad’s band and brought a lighter vocal tone.  His background in heavy metal gave him the ability to hit high notes, which he adapted effectively for R&B.  After a few more changes, the group settled on a new name inspired by a favorite Color Me Badd song: Slō Motion.

The group still needed a fourth singer to complete their blend and chemistry.  Billy, who had attended the University of Kansas, introduced Eurvin Williams, whom he met in KU Jazz Choir. Eurvin’s gospel background and smooth lower register fit naturally with the group’s sound, and with him, Slō Motion was complete.

Slō Motion began winning talent shows consistently and built a solid local following, performing anywhere they had the opportunity.  Their momentum eventually led to a production deal with Interscope.  Although there were other offers, they, along with the Interscope deal ultimately fell through.  In 2000, without having released an album—though they had several recordings—the group disbanded.

Over the years, Slō Motion reunited for a few special occasions but never officially re-formed. Three members stepped away from music, while Roger continued and eventually earned a Top 10 album in 2016.  In 2020, the group made an attempt to record an EP, but the pandemic brought the effort to a halt.

In 2024, Billy and Eurvin attended Roger’s annual Christmas party, where the three ended up singing a few songs together.  That brief moment led Roger to consider making one more attempt at recording as a group.  He wrote and produced a song called “Comin Back To Christmas,” tailoring each part to the members’ voices as they had done years earlier.  After some discussion, Billy, Dave, and Eurvin agreed to participate.

Now, 25 years later, Slō Motion has reunited once more—likely for the final time.
